Settle - Carlisle Railway

High Laning

The Settle – Carlisle Railway is one of the UK’s greatest railways with amazing views and scenery from start to finish. Dent is one of the stations along through route of the railway and boasts having the highest altitude for a train station at 1,150 Feet above sea level.

The building of the Settle- Carlisle railway began in 1869 and continued until 1876, it being the last of the major engineering undertakings of the Victorian era to be entirely constructed by “ Navvies”, or “Navigators”, the name by which the work force on such projects was then known.
